| In October of 2011, Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia's 6th District, along with Communications Director & Legislative Assistant Kathryn S. Rexrode, visited the Disciples Kitchen to help serve lunch and present a check in the amount of $1,000. Congressman Goodlatte made the presentation to President Bob Treacy during lunch, where approximately 65 people were present.
Congressman Goodlatte has been donating a portion of his salary to Sixth District charities since taking office in 1993. His original contributions were equal to the salary increases he would have received through a pay increase Congress approved for itself before he took office in 1993. Upon taking office Congressman Goodlatte asked the House Sergeant at Arms if the office could issue his check without the salary increase. The answer was no. It was then that Congressman Goodlatte decided if he couldn’t give it back to the U.S. Treasury he would donate the money to the many wonderful non-profit and charitable organizations across the Sixth District.
His most recent contributions also include the last pay raise Congress received which was in 2009. Currently, Congressman Goodlatte contributes $9,000 annually to nine different non‑profit organizations across the Sixth Congressional District. To date he has contributed a total of $93,125 to over 80 different Sixth Congressional District charities and non‑profit organizations.
The Board of Directors, Volunteers and service recipients of Disciples Kitchen would like to say a very sincere, heartfelt, "THANK YOU" to Congressman Goodlatte for his generous donation and for his participation in our lunch program. We were honored that he and Kathryn chose Disciples Kitchen as one of their stops for the day.
